| Project Description: |
The University of Michigan Dioxin Exposure Study is designed to determine if there is a relationship between levels of dioxins in soil and household dust and levels of dioxins in people’s bodies. It will also examine other factors – where people live, what they eat, their jobs and their hobbies – that may be associated with levels of dioxins in people’s bodies. UMDES will focus on a sample of residents in the counties of Midland, Saginaw, Bay, Jackson and Calhoun Michigan. Selected residents will be at least age 18 and will have lived at their current address for the past five years. Jackson and Calhoun Counties were selected to represent other areas of Michigan that have no known industrial source of dioxins. Eligible respondents will be asked to complete a one-hour personal interview, provide a blood sample, consent to sampling of house dust, and consent to sampling of soil adjacent to their home. Field Interviewers will not be collecting blood, dust and soil samples. The Interviewer will the ask respondent questions about their health, residence, food consumption, soil use and recreational activities. |
